The happenings of this past year were quite significant for my personal life, as well as my career, and I’m ending this year motivated to keep working towards the growth of this space from what it started seven years ago in my college apartment. I found a place by accident in the digital world by googling something that I didn’t even know existed at the time, which all of a sudden became a portal to a road that I never thought I could ever trek. It’s been seven years of running this blog, and my enthusiasm is still the same as it was in the beginning. It’s been hard work (post coming on that soon), but this blog is the perfect example of showing the pay offs of working with passion to pursue the things you love to do. It’s allowed me to not just share the indulgences I love like clothing and fashion, but it allowed me to speak my mind on topics beyond just those things because I think the story behind it all is the most important. A visual story board with words to match. I hope this space allows you to have a place to speak your mind, too. Looking forward to year 8 of WWW.DYLANASUAREZ.COM. And looking forward to many more words to be shared. Each year has shown many shining stars, all of which I have kept in my pocket to remind me to reach for them even more the next time around 🙂
Hey ho, it’s the holidays! I’ve been trying really hard to make sure I take my daily dose of sparkles. Anything glittery has been catching my eye for the past month, especially in neutral tones. Maybe this is a trend that will end up going beyond the holiday season for me. I know sparkles in overdrive can be a bit obnoxous, but they seem to be the best and only diversion to the cold nowadays. It also seems like I have found another diversion. And that is PatriciaNash‘s “Strap Happy” collection that is currently available at Macy’s. I was drawn to the masculine simplicity of this bag as soon as I saw it. So much function and heritage in it’s style. For me, classic is the way to go when it comes to what goes on the shoulder. And this one fit the bill. And then things started to get really exciting once I found out that Patricia Nash had a collection of interchangebale straps. Because classic should never be boring. It gives the feeling of a brand new purse in a quick second. A fresh strap is like a blank slate, which feels exactly right with the new year approaching. I chose the Patricia Nash Interchangable Patchwork Monte Viso strap because I was drawn to its earthy hues. It reminds me of Woodstock in the 60’s and 70’s. Even though I prefer sparkles more nowadays than bohemian fringe, I still can’t let go of my roots. I will always be a hippie at heart deep, deep down inside. I can dance to both disco and Bob Dylan. How about that? xx

I had the pleasure of coming across a brand new, very special gem in the middle of Soho. The Follain store on Mercer Street is a one-of-a-kind, healthy beauty shopping experience. Follain goes beyond just offering men and women a wide selection from 60 of the healthiest, high-performance, non-toxic beauty brands. The store also has a mission . . and that’s to change your outlook on the beauty industry, which is far from beautiful once you really start to do the research. But in this specific case, you yourself don’t actually need to do the research. Follain already has that figured out for you, and they make a point to keep their customer knowledgeable about all the reasons why they should be making the switch to a clean, organic, all natural beauty routine. This was just my first visit to Follain, and I’m already switching things out of my beauty cabinet!
After speaking with Follain’s founder Tara Foley, I felt much more up-to-date on the current crisis of the beauty industry in the United States. Did you know that the US only bans has 11 ingredients in beauty products? In Europe, that toxic list is made up of over a thousand ingredients. That means the regulations in the US are much more lenient. But what does that mean for our skin and bodies? It gives much more freedom from big beauty brands to put whatever the heck they want in their products, and label it as good. In reality, it means we are feeding our bodies the bad stuff such as chemicals that they don’t actually know how to process. In turn, this causes build up, which has the high possibility of linking to health issues including cancer. How scary is that?!
Follain does all the dirty work for you, filtering through the best of the best brands that meet every safety standard (meaning everything in the store is 100% non-toxic) and have gone through major testing for high performance. Follain has a strict Restricted Substances List (RSL), and it is one of the most strict in the industry. It is a list of un-safe ingredients that you will never find in an Follain products. This way their customer is ensured that every product purchased is a healthy, wholesome product. Currently the store carries 60 passionate brands. Each brand’s products are categorized in the store by type, as opposed to brand. I LOVE this concept, and it’s actually super rare in my experiences shopping beauty. It really makes the process so easy, I have a problem or a skin problem I want to target, and I know exactly where to go to look for the solution. But not just one solution, multiple ones within the category. The staff is so knowledgeable, narrowing down the brand within the type is as easy as 1-2-3.
I was fascinated learning about all the ways we can help the environment and most importantly our own bodies by going completely non-toxic and all natural with my beauty regime. It only makes sense. I spend so much time on my fitness each week, looking forward to that dewy after glow after a really good workout. I make sure to cook at home as often as possible with fresh fruits and vegetables because they make me feel great. I listen to music and focus on creative endeavors to feed my mind and soul. Why was I never making smart choices with the products that I use on my body? With the amount I layer on in the morning and night each day, it adds up A LOT.. And then think about the amount of years . . . well, the effect from that is a very scary thought. But I have realized that reversal is a thing, and that it’s never too late to make changes. Follain taught me that. Not just skincare, but this goes for makeup, too. The makeup application area at the back of the store is made to help you feel and look like a movie star. Makeup artist included 🙂
And the store is so, so gorgeous. Inspiring in every way as soon as one walks in. It for sure grabs the attention of every aesthetic seeker. Pretty plants. Non-toxic, luxuriously scented candles. Little touches here and there that make you feel right at home. Or make you wish it was your actual home (trust me, it was hard to leave). If you care not about the ingredients as much, then at least this is a place you can go if you care about the presentation. Follain has all that, too.
Stop in to shop and get holiday-ready. Follain is offering makeup and skincare consultations in store, makeovers by appointment, and lots of new non-toxic ways to shimmer and shine.Their Soho calendar is also quickly filling up with lots of events you will love, from wreath-making classes featuring Follain ingredients, to in-store yoga to help you unwind – and more!
What a long and beautiful weekend to come back from. My Wednesday to Sunday was fantastically spent partially in the Connecticut suburbs with my lovely friend Christina and her family, and partially home in NYC where my Brooklyn abode felt like the ultimate haven. I woke up at 10AM every morning. Each day a steady swing of this and that, but nothing rushed, my usual routine strung out long and wide. And each night was ended with a cup of sleepy tea, and my bed and my body became one. It was the perfect few days to reset before getting thrown into the December craziness (holidays and work included!). There’s so much content I want to get up on here for you guys, so stay tuned. So now . . . onto other important things in the life of a fashion blogger . . . the weather.
NYC’s fickle mindset has finally shifted for good, and everyone has gone into full on winter mode. And with every switch in the season, there seems to be an update in statement item. For me this season, that item is my Jocelyn chevron fur coat. It’s probably the warmest piece of outerwear that I own. So reliable cozy, capturing every bit of heat from my body and keeping it close, close by to me for what seems like forever. The act of plucking it off my rack each morning before heading out of my apartment has suddenly become second nature, and for good reason. NYC winter’s are harsh, as if you guys didn’t already know. They make walking down the block to the corner store an excruciating activity. Almost as bad, or maybe worse, than going to the dentist. And all the money I spend on cold weather accessories just get thrown out the window as I lose beanies, mittens and scarves in random places throughout he city. An aggravating truth us city dwellers cannot escape. My skin is dry to the point that it sometimes hurts. Not to mention, my nose and ears start to feel like absolutely nothing that there is no point in hearing or smelling. I complain to my superintendent at least once a week about why the heater isn’t staying on throughout the night. Instead, I light a million candles by my bed to keep my and the three sweaters I’ve layered on company. And let me tell you, that’s a fire hazard waiting to happen. Winter, you come and you go and you never make it easier on us. But at least now, in the form of a chevron painted cuddle monster, I don’t feel you quite as much. Hardly at all actually, so that walking down the street is actually quite the delight. And you don’t find many people saying that round here too often. Good luck staying warm peeps.
