Hold Onto the Things That Feel Fleeting

When I’m up on this rooftop, looking at our city from above; seeing it so far yet so close as the future seems unreachable, I still see those glimmers of what it was before, and this keeps me going. I was reading my book, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and this passage stood out to me because it in some way represented how I feel about holding onto the things in the world that can normally feel fleeting, and how this can give us hope:

“As time passed and the sky came increasingly under the sway of the bright morning sun of summer, one star at a time would obliterate itself from my field of view. They did this with the utmost gentleness, and I studied the process of obliteration with wide-open eyes. The summer sun did not, however, erase every star from the sky. A few of the strongest ones remained. No matter how high the sun climbed, they took a stubborn stance and refused to disappear. This made me happy:  aside from the occasional cloud that drifted by, the stars were the only things I could see from down there.”

I definitely don’t get all dressed up as much these days, but I love the feeling of productivity and motivation that getting dressed instills, even if I technically have nowhere to go. The art of getting dressed is still not only my job, but most importantly, it is a creative outlet and a source of inspiration I can share with this community of you all. The inspiration I find in my closet right now will stretch far into the days post-quarantine. But I must say, I have never owned more matching sweats and workout sets ever before in my life. I’m also going to let this sort of comfort-focused, wellness dressing carry over into life post-quarantine, because I think we all need to continue this self-loving shift of mindset. But today, I’m keeping these heels on, even though I’m only working from the couch.

My favorite time of day has to be the early evening, right after work and right before dinner. Usually during this time I’m reflecting on my day, hopefully feeling proud of my accomplishments and giving myself a little cheers after a hard day’s work. I get to ease my mind the most during this time, even if it’s just an hour to myself to unwind with a tea, a book, a film, some music. It is the time when we can kick back and put aside time just for ourselves. It is when we get to push work to the back of our minds for a bit, and just focus on the present moment. To me, it’s the time when my imagination kicks in, and I come up with creative ideas that I will mentally take note of. Or I will just enjoy them for what they are as they are in my head. It’s the hour for a glass of wine, and just your thoughts. And I can have an amazing dinner to look forward to. I love cooking, so this time of the day is always so therapeutic for me 🙂
